Jason Day was the recipient of the very first Greg Norman Medal after being adjudged as the best-performing international golfer in Australia.
The 28-year-old golfer ranked no.2 in the world, having won in the PGA Tour five times in the US this year. This includes his first major at the US PGA Championship. He is just one of the eight male and female nominees by the PGA in Australia. He finished tied at fourth in the British Open.
Day, whose mother is a Filipina, is also being hailed as a proud ‘kababayan’ of the Filipino community.
Also given an award is Jarrod Lyle. The PGA Tour Courage award was given to him for his thorough battle with cancer. Lyle has overcome two bouts with acute myeloid leukemia. He is currently in the second year of a medical extension granted to him for because of his life-threatening illness.
The awards were given last Tuesday at an awarding ceremony. The even happened just a couple of days before the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Pines.
“On behalf of the Australian golf industry, I congratulate Jason on winning the inaugural Greg Norman Medal and convey how proud we are of all his achievements this year,” said Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA.
“Jason stood out head and shoulders above all other players, both male and female, and he’s a great representative of Australian golf.”
This year alone, Day already received several awards including The Don Award to the Sports Australia Hall of Fame, the Greg Normal Medal, and the Queensland Sports Star of the Year.
“It is an honor and privilege to win the Greg Normal Medal. It caps off an amazing year. I’d like to thank the PGA of Australia for launching this medal with Greg Normal and their support over the past ten years,” said Day.
He bested Adam Scott, Matt Jones, Rebecca Artis, Minjee Lee, Marc Leishman, Karrie Webb, and Steven Bowditch for the most prestigious award in golf.
