No, he won’t be following suit after Kobe Bryant. He’s too young to leave the professional league. But for Davidson College, they have plans of retiring Stephen Curry’s jersey on one condition: Graduation.
The college only retires jerseys of notable players if they have completed their academic years in school. This is what Steph Curry lacks. He left school in 2009 without finishing his degree.
“I knew what I signed up for when I want to Davidson. I made a promise to Coach Bob McKillop and my family that when I left school in 2009, what I left would be accomplished. It will be soon. Hopefully, sooner than later.” Said Curry.
Tagged as the biggest catalyst for Davidson during his stay, Athletic Director Jim Murphy said, there won’t be changes and exceptions for Curry to be recognized.
“It’s one of those things where, I’m not even sure who would make that decision to be honest with you, just because it’s never come up before. I assume it would be the board of trustees,” said Murphy.
Challenges when it comes to maintaining an academic schedule that does not affect his NBA practices may have been a hindrance for Curry. The school does not offer summer classes, which is rather unfortunate as this could have made it easier for him to finish his remaining classes. Plus, the Warriors are on a roll. Curry cannot, and should not, take in distractions to his focus on their campaign.
Imagine the Warriors playing without their best start this season? Well, Curry will still have his hands full this summer as he is a part of the 34-man pool of the National Team who will start preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympics. After all, the US is after another gold medal.
Curry is just short of a few classes from earning that degree. According to him, he has researched a plan of attack of how to get it done.
“It’s still a priority for sure. Obviously, there’s a lot going on right now. Taking advantage of my career right now in the NBA, it’s only a very short window. So, you want to give all the attention and effort. But, to be able to finish out that part of my life, whenever it does happen, will be huge.”
So, until he finishes his degree at Davidson, his jersey will only be visible at the Davidson’s Belk Arena worn by fans who wear replicas. Lastly, the open locker in the Davidson locker room named “Steph Curry locker” will still be open with his old Wildcats jersey on display.
