Will the Sacramento Kings have their first female NBA head coach in NBA history?
With a 5-9 record, the Kings’ management may have to turn their ideas into a reality. Changes might happen soon, and it might even go down to NBA history.
The Sacramento Kings and owner Vivek Ranadive are eyeing to make the Kings the first NBA team to have a female head coach. It may take a little while before that happens, but management is seriously considering the idea of elevating current team assistant Nancy Lieberman to the head tactician role. Although in a report by Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report said, the Kings are eyeing Kentucky’s John Calipari as a possible replacement for the stagnant George Karl. They have been pursuing Calipari for a few years already but there is just no progress. His achievements as a coach in the college level may well equate to a successful run for the Kings as well if he’s taken in to call the shots.
The 57-year-old Lieberman was hired just over the summer. She became the second female assistant to penetrate the league after Becky Hammon joined the San Antonio Spurs. Lieberman’s coaching experiences includes coaching in the WNBA and NBA D-League.
Being a head coach in the NBA is a different story, most especially familiarity with the league will be a major factor. Lieberman has spent around four months in the league so far.
The tantrums thrown by DeMarcus Cousins weeks back may have triggered management to seriously consider a coaching revamp.
With the noise the Kings have made during the off-season until now, Ranadive wants to take their organization to the next level. Though their ‘possible’ appointment on Lieberman may only be temporary, it would be enough to make the headlines, and possibly pump the team up.
Current assistant Corliss Williamson is also being considered if Sacramento decides to let go of Karl. His familiarity with the Kings’ current line, their strengths and weaknesses make him a strong candidate.
The Kings’ General Manager and former player Vlade Divac, if given the hand to choose, will pick Williamson. Corliss, who was a part of the team in the early 2000’s was hired in 2013 as an assistant. Again, familiarity with the team, including the length of stay with the organization would really matter at the end of the day.
