An insect, known as the “kissing bug” has been making the rounds in South Carolina. This was reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Chagas disease may spread in the state once these Triatomine bugs carry a parasite that can cause that disease.
Usually, these bugs are found in the southern part of the US, specifically in Mexico, Central America, and South America.
According to studies, it may be pretty hard and complicated before humans are infected with Chagas disease. The said infection is transmitted through the feces of the bugs. A human can be infected with the disease of the feces of the bug gets in contact with an open wound. But the eyes or mouth can also be portals for the feces to penetrate the body.
It was also reported that the ‘kissing bug’ is now also in Missouri and Illinois.
The kissing bug is considered also as a silent killer, that if it is not treated right away, the infection could lead to death. Symptoms of the disease include pain in the gut, or swelling where the bug bit the person.
But experts say humans can go as long as two decades before the parasites’ full effect takes over.
If one comes across a kissing bug, they should not be in direct contact with it. With safety precautions, they can place it in a container before shipping it to the health department.
So as not to attract these bugs, people are encourage to keep their houses clean. Have your pets sleep indoors especially at night. Houses should have screen doors to prevent insects’ easy access.
According to the World Health Organization, around one fourth of the people bitten by the bug will see swelling in an eyelid. Symptoms may be fever, headache, enlarged lymph glands, muscle pain, difficulty in breathing, swelling, and abdominal or chest pain.
