The 1948-1949 Washington Capitols and the 1994 Houston Rockets now share the honor of blazing the season with a 15-0 start with Golden State as the Warriors outlast the Denver Nuggets, 118-105 Sunday.
Though the Warriors are after another championship title run, the feat they achieved is just a bonus.
After a 106-94 victory over Chicago last Friday, Golden State went 14-0.
For the reigning MVP, “It’s a goal that’s right here and now and it’s something we want to experience. It’d be a huge accomplishment because doing something that hasn’t been done in the history of the league is special. You never know if this opportunity will come back again. There are so many variables that go into winning this many in a row, especially the start of the season.”
The Warriors tied the 1957-1958 Boston Celtics as the only defending champion to win their first 14 games.
Golden State is just one out of the five NBA teams to begin with a season with a 14-0 record.
Though it was a close game in the first half with the Warriors just up by six points at the intermission, Golden State asserted aggressiveness in the final frame to shut down any chance of a comeback for the Nuggets. Going into the last two minutes of the game, the Warriors were holding on to a 112-97 lead that sealed the game to their favor.
Klay Thompson paced the Warriors with 21 points, three rebounds, seven assists, and one block. Curry, Harrison Barnes, and Draymond Green adding 19, 17, and 13 respectively.
The Nuggets dropped to 6-8. Darrell Arthur led the scoring for Denver with 21 points, eight rebounds and one steal.
The Warriors will be out to get their 16th straight win on Wednesday when they play the Los Angeles Lakers at the Oracle Arena.
The Lakers are at the bottom of the Western Conference with a dismal 2-10 mark.
